When the hot weather hits in your neck of the woods there is one thing that no one wants to live without anymore.  And that is air conditioning!  It is truly impressive how much our society has become accustomed to life with these units!  It is one of the biggest factors that has led to the impressive population growth in Arizona, Texas and other traditionally hot climates which were hard to live in before the advent of readily available AC. With this being the case, living without is simply unacceptable in this day and age.  Here are the signs that it is time to get a new system in your home.

Time for a New Central Air Conditioner

1. You have an old unit – I know that people hate spending a bunch of money on HVAC, but the reality is that these systems are only designed for about 15 years of use on average.  Sure you can get 20+ year out of them if you are lucky, but if you unit is more than 12 years old and starts acting up it is time to seriously consider replacing it.

2. Your efficiency is poor. Systems are new as 5 to 8 years can still have SEER ratings in the 8 range.  Given the advance of the past decade in terms of AC efficiency it can be a good idea to replace to a high efficiency model of today.  Some models even get north of 20 SEER and can pay for themselves quite quickly in the heavy use areas like Houston, TX and Phoenix, AZ.

3. Your outside unit has seen better days. If your exterior condenser has been damaged by the weather (hail can wreak havoc on systems, especially if it gets in the range of golf ball sized) you need to get a new unit.  Even if it continues to work, it will only be a matter of time before failure.  In addition, if the fins on your condenser have been bent you won’t get the necessary airflow required to run the system and you should change it.

While spending time and money on an HVAC system isn’t the most fun thing to do, it definitely will pay for itself in comfort once the heat waves strike.  Knowing what the warning signs are for your AC system are paramount to continued cool living when the weather turns hot!
