5 Dos and Don’ts When Decorating Your Home

Here are some of the things that you must do when decorating your home:

  1. If you have collections of certain objects, group them in one location so that they could be easily seen. If you will display them separately, there is a good chance that they might not even get noticed.
  2. Control the flow of traffic. Provide ample space between coffee tables and sofas. Also see to it that those who might want to go into the kitchen for soda won’t have to pass right in front of the television and block your view for several seconds.
  3. Use plants or flowers as they provide you the feeling of peace and relaxation. Make sure that the vases are stable so that they won’t be easily toppled down.
  4. Make the place cozier with appropriate lighting. Table and floor lamps always do the trick. Install dimmers for overhead lights. Prefer using energy-saving bulbs all around the house.
  5. Never be afraid to explore. There are many “new” things that you can do around the house in order to give it a different feel. Pictures do not have to be always framed and table tops do not have to be always cluttered.

The following items are some reminders on what not to do to your home.

  1. Although symmetry could give you that feeling of calm and order, don’t overdo it since it could make the room seem rigid. If you have arranged the furniture symmetrically, wall arts and centerpieces could be arranged differently.
  2. Never leave a corner, especially a big one, bare and undecorated. Fill them with a comfortable recliner, a table with pictures, plants or interesting lamps.
  3. Do not hang your wall decors or art pieces too high up on the wall. A good rule of thumb is to have them at eye level or at least 60 inches from the floor. In this way, it could be properly appreciated. There is no point in having an art piece around if the person viewing it has to strain his neck or shade his eyes in order to appreciate it.
  4. Never put almost all your furniture on an area rug that is too small. It will look as if you have a magic carpet in the center of the room and could attract more criticisms rather than praises. Choose floor coverings that can accommodate the seating arrangement that you want for your sofa or furniture.
  5. Do not put a lot of throw pillows on sofas, couches or chairs. There is no established limit for the number of throw pillows that you can put on a sofa. What you can do is to check if a couple of your guests would need to cradle two throw pillows on their laps in order to have their behinds comfortably settled. If you sit six inches high from a chair or if you have to remove several pillows before you can sit down on the couch, then it means that you have piled up too much throw pillows.
