Recycle any pail/bin lying around and drill some holes at the bottom of the pail for aeration. Drill some holes on the lid too. Place some newspapers at the bottom to cover the holes, before you start adding the waste. Make sure you keep this bin in a shady area to avoid too much sun or rain. Keep it in your backyard, if you have one or on the balcony if you live in a flat.

To start the compost, start adding your kitchen or garden waste on a daily basis till the bin is 3/4th full. Biodegradable materials like paper napkins, eggshells, bones etc can be added. Make sure no chemicals, plastic or metal gets into the bin. Things like plastic can hinder composting by slowing it down.

The pile has to be mixed on a regular basis to help composting. Use a shovel or a stick to mix it. Make sure, you do not add too much water in it or it will attract rodents and other insects. If the pile gets too wet, mix dried leaves or shredded newspaper to absorb the additional water. If it is too dry, sprinkle some water. The moisture is needed for the process of composting. The pile has to be mixed and checked for moisture atleast once in a week.

Once the pile turns black in color, leave it with in-between checks and collect your waste in another bin. After 2 -3 months, you will have fine black powder, which you can use in your garden.
