Anyone who has undergone the irritating presence of gnats in the house will appreciate efficient pest control methods. These pests are forever in your home and seem impossible to get rid of. Here are a few tips that will help in eliminating these pesky creatures.

Due to their small size and their high rate of multiplication, these insects can be difficult to eradicate. Many people know that gnats are attracted to any source of food, but what most do not know is that they are also attracted to warm, moist places.

This means that apart from their usual food source like the garbage cans, which you probably change regularly as part of your gnat eradication routine, your house plants may just be the perfect place for them to perch. These plants which are well sheltered from the harsh conditions outside serve the purpose of harboring gnats. As a preventative measure, you should stop over-watering your plants and provide a proper way for the plant pots to drain off excess water.

If you already have a gnat infestation that you are unable to shake off, then you may have to resort to chemical control methods. Bug bombs and adhesive traps are the best to kill or capture gnats. Lure them to one place by using rotting fruit. Once they swarm to the fruit, you can use the chemical agent of choice.

You can also utilize homemade remedies when it comes to getting rid of gnats. Vinegar seems to be highly attractive to gnats. Use a spray bottle and label it appropriately. Pour vinegar and a liquid insect killer into the bottle. Shake well to combine the contents of the bottle. Spray the chemical onto the gnat infested areas. Additional eradication methods include combining vinegar and dish washing liquid or vinegar and baking soda in a bottle. Exercise care with the vinegar and baking soda mixture as it tends to foam rapidly.

Another way of eliminating gnats is to look for their breeding areas. Place covered jars with vinegar at the locations where they settle. Poke holes in the jar covers so that they can wiggle themselves into the jar. Make sure that the holes do not allow them to come back out. The jars with the highest number of gnats will indicate where they breed. Clean those areas thoroughly. Also, find out what is attracting them to those locations and take the necessary measures to destroy those breeding grounds. Since gnats thrive in moist conditions, check your kitchen sink drain. Pour ammonia down your kitchen sink to eliminate them.

Implementing good hygienic practices around your home on a consistent basis is the key to eliminating your gnat invasion. Keep all foods in the refrigerator or in airtight containers on the shelves. Do not leave empty pizza boxes or food wrappers exposed. Dispose of such items immediately. Change your garbage cans frequently and take care of your plants. Wash your dirty dishes immediately after using them.
